About The School Chaplain

GENERAL
The School has just had the pleasure of appointing a new Chaplain, Kami Hazlewood from Scripture Union Queensland. She hails from the USA and not only has professional experience, but with two children of her own, knows how hard it can be.

Here is her story:

Hi my name is Kami Hazlewood. I grew up in the US and attended Bethel College where I completed a BA in Sociocultural Studies. I received basic Bible and Theological training as part of my degree. I spent a semester in Townsville where I met my husband, Andrew. We settled in Brisbane and are raising two beautiful children - Hailey and Lachlan.

I completed my DipEd (Middle Years) in 2007. I have worked with children as a mentor for the last 14 years in schools, churches and through various camp and inner city outreach programs. Chaplaincy in a culmination of my experiences, training and heart for children.

WHAT DO SU QLD CHAPLAINS DO?
A school Chaplain is a safe person for children to connect with at school, providing a listening ear, caring presence, and message of hope. They care for students and families struggling with confusing relationships, peer pressure, and self-esteem issues, family breakdown, depression, suicide, bullying, drug issues, physical, sexual and emotional abuse, and many more things.

Chaplains also run positive, fun activities for children both in and out of school and foster a supportive, caring school community. This includes support for at-risk students, support for staff and families from the wider school community, and spiritual support and direction for the school community.

The partnership between the school and the Chaplain, supported by local churches, businesses and community organisations, provides a network of local support and assistance. These positive relationships help children to face issues and provide hope, connection, meaning and purpose.

Please note the following:

  • This information has been compiled from the Scripture Union Queensland Pamphlet created for Kami and JHSS. The P & C acknowledge their copyright and ownership of this information.
  • A Chaplain is not usually a General Practitioner, Psychologist, Psychiatrist or Counselor. They aim to be a trusted place for children and parents to go to when they need help. A Chaplain will then, if requested, make confidential contact with other professionals who are trained to provide further assistance.)
  • The Chaplaincy program at JHSS is provided by a Christian Organisation. This does not mean that the programs contain Christian teachings, scriptures or bible readings. If you have any concerns regarding the direction these programs may take, or the types of advice that may be given, please contact us.

PROGRAMS
Kami is very interested in starting up programs for the students and parents, but needs to know what kinds of issues the programs should address. If you know of any issues that you feel the community would benefit from having a program about, please let us know, and you can remain anonymous if you like (however please type something in the contact form fields or it will not send). Some pretty common issues could be:

  • How to deal with divorce or death (parents and children)
  • Say no to bullying and make friends instead (children)
  • Abuse or discipline? how to encourage your children to success (parents)
